Flat Water is Key to capturing perfect beams of light

1. Flat Water surface gives you the best beams of light. Its not how deep you are, you can actually capture rays of light at the shallowest depth provided you know what exposure settings to play with.

Beams of light can be captured even without funnelled light, but it's less pronounced, the secret, Flat water and angle of light
2.  Time of Day. In this location at Gunther's Cathedral, the best time to capture awesome beams of light is from 8:00am to 11:00 am, where small opening atop the cavern is positioned to funnel light best at the prescribed time.

Take note of the group picture above from the entrance of the Cathedral, you can still capture rays but less pronounced, again, water was quite flat that day

3. Camera Settings. There is no one setting here since natural light changes every minute. Do experiment with what works best but the best tip I can give is use Higher Iso than you normally would, at around 800 and balance your shutter and aperture settings accordingly.

Below is the short video so you can visualize our location and how light behaves underwater through this short 30 second video.
